Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo Apprehends Genocide Indictee

The United States commends the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the capture of Yusuf Munyakazi and his transfer to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania.  Munyakazi is indicted for genocide for his alleged role as a leader of the Hutu extremist Interahamwe responsible for killing tens of thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda’s Cyangugu prefecture during the genocide in 1994.

In making this apprehension, the Congolese Government acted on information developed by UN Tribunal investigators with the help of informants who came forward under the Department of State’s Rewards for Justice Program.  The program offers rewards of up to $5 million for information leading to the apprehension of fugitive indictees.  Such efforts to isolate and confront Hutu extremists help promote peace throughout the region.

We also thank the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) for its assistance in the transfer of Munyakazi to the UN Tribunal.

The United States urges all governments in the region to vigorously pursue the apprehension of all persons indicted for genocide by the UN Tribunal who have gained refuge on their soil, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1534 (2004).  Remaining ICTR indictees include Felicien Kabuga, Augustin Ngirabatiware, Idelphonse Nizeyimana, Protais Mpiranya, Callixte Nzabonimana, Charles Sikuwabo, Aloys Ndimbati and Ryandikayo.
