Question Taken at Daily Briefing of May 11, 2004

U.S.-China Economic Dialogue

Question: Please provide a readout of the dialogue Under Secretary Larson and others in the Administration had today with Vice Minister Zhu Zhixin and China's National Development and Reform Commission?

Answer: The United States and People's Republic of China on May 11 held the opening session of the bilateral Economic Development and Reform Dialogue. This is the second round of the dialogue; the first was held in Beijing last November.

Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs Alan Larson and Vice Minister Zhu Zhixin of China's National Development and Reform Commission co-chaired the meeting. Representatives from other agencies, including the Council of Economic Advisors, Treasury, Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative attended.

The bilateral dialogue is geared to discuss longer term issues of importance to the United States and China. The topics discussed during the May 11 plenary session included both broad economic policies and sectoral development issues.

There will be a closing plenary session May 12.
