Deputy Secretary Armitage's Meeting With European Security Officials

Deputy Secretary Armitage met today with European Union (EU) Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, Antonio Vitorino, and EU Counterterrorism Coordinator, Gijs de Vries. Commissioner Vitorino raised the prospect of including all EU member states in the Visa Waiver Program and announced the Commission's development of a paper on EU-wide rules on the exchange of personal data for law enforcement purposes, including counterterrorism. The two sides discussed trafficking in persons, security for the summer Olympics, and cooperation on counterterrorism to include greater transparency, information exchange and assistance to third countries.
