Question Taken at Daily Briefing of May 13, 2004

Discussions With Kuwait on Guantanamo Detainees

Question: What discussions are we having with the Government of Kuwait regarding Kuwaiti detainees in Guantanamo Bay?

Answer: The Government of Kuwait is sending a delegation to Washington next week to discuss the disposition of their nationals detained at Guantanamo Bay. These discussions are part of an ongoing process to reach a final determination on all detainees. As part of this process, detainees could be prosecuted or continue to be detained by the United States Government, transferred back to their home country for prosecution or continued detention, or released if they no longer pose a threat to the United States or our allies. To date, 146 detainees have been transferred or released from Guantanamo as a result of this process.
