Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to Address International Political Directors on the Way Forward in Iraq

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will deliver remarks at the opening of a day-long Department of State discussion with international Political Director-level officials on the way forward in Iraq. The discussion will focus on issues of interest to nations that have contributed to Iraq’s security and reconstruction. Assistant Secretaries of State for Europe and Eurasia; Near East; Western Hemisphere; East Asia; International Organizations; and Political Military Affairs bureaus have invited counterparts to discuss Iraq’s future, including the transition to a sovereign Iraqi interim government and the elements of a new UN Security Council resolution.

The Secretary is scheduled to speak Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. in the Loy Henderson Auditorium. The press is invited to cover Secretary Powell’s remarks. The rest of the meeting is closed to the press.

Pre-set time for cameras: 7:30 a.m. from the C Street entrance
Final access time for all press: 8:15 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance

Media representatives who plan to attend must present one of the following press credentials: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (State Department, White House, Congress, Defense Department or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying employment as a journalist, accompanied by official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
