Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage Trip To BrusselsDeputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will travel to Brussels May 31 to June 2, 2004 for consultations with fellow donor co-chairs of the Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka on the current status of the peace process in Sri Lanka. Other participants will represent the governments of Norway, Japan and the European Union. The donor co-chairs will review their assistance efforts, discuss humanitarian and basic reconstruction assistance to the war-devastated areas of the country, and express support for a resumption of peace talks between the government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which have been suspended since April 2003.
Mr. Armitage will also consult with the North Atlantic Council of NATO on preparations for NATO's Summit in Istanbul and meet with EU High Representative Javier Solana.
