Brazil's Proposed Air Bridge Denial Program

Question:   Is there any role for the US anticipated in Brazil's proposed air bridge denial program? If so, are there any legal restrictions/impediments on US participation?

Answer:   We understand that a Brazilian law passed in 1998 permits government authorities to shoot down aircraft determined to be hostile.
We are in consultations with the Brazilian government regarding this program. We have informed Brazilian authorities that for liability reasons, the U.S. government would need to suspend relevant assistance to Brazil if it implemented such a program without satisfying U.S. legal requirements.
