| Taken Questions Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC June 4, 2004 Question Taken at Daily Briefing of June 4, 2004 China - Crackdown on Tiananmen Square CommemorationsQuestion: What is the U.S. Government's reaction to the crackdown on those in China who want to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square events?
Answer: There are reports that up to 16 individuals were detained on or near Tiananmen Square on this, the 15th anniversary of the tragedy. Many others were forced to stay at their homes or otherwise detained over the past several days to prevent any commemoration of the event.
We are concerned about the harassment, house arrest, detention, and other restrictions on those who want to mark the anniversary or seek government accountability for the Tiananmen crackdown. We call on the Chinese government to respect the right of its citizens to peacefully express their views.
Many Chinese, including recently Dr. Jiang Yanyong who held China to a high standard during last year's SARS crisis, have called for the government to reverse the verdict that the peaceful demonstrations were a "rebellion" and reassess the use of lethal force against unarmed civilians.
China cannot enjoy real stability until the Chinese people have the full freedoms and rights, including a voice in their government, that are the hallmark of a modern country.
