Deputy Secretary Armitage Meeting with Gyude Bryant, Chairman, National Transitional Government of Liberia

Deputy Secretary Richard L. Armitage met on June 7, 2004, with His Excellency Gyude Bryant, Chairman of the National Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL). Deputy Secretary Armitage reiterated U.S. support for the Bryant Government as well as the need for increased reform. The Deputy Secretary affirmed also Liberia’s need to meet the UN’s terms for the eventual lifting of sanctions on Liberia’s export of diamonds and timber.

The United States already has obligated $114 million of its $200 million pledge from the February 5-6, 2004, Liberia Reconstruction Conference held in New York, and will soon be allocating the remainder. However, many others in the international community have not yet released other pledged funds. The United States calls on all donors to move quickly in providing its $322 million in public pledges made at the February conference in order to address Liberia’s urgent and critical needs.
