Secretary of State Colin L. Powell To Commemorate World Refugee Day

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, along with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, will commemorate World Refugee Day on Wednesday June 16, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. in the Grosvenor Auditorium at the National Geographic Museum at Explorer's Hall, 1145 17th Street, NW, Washington, DC. Secretary Powell will deliver brief remarks, introduce a videotape message from First Lady Laura Bush, and present awards to American student winners of the 4th Annual UNHCR World Refugee Day Poster Contest. The Secretary will not be taking questions.

The commemoration is sponsored by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The theme of World Refugee Day and the poster competition this year is "To Feel at Home."

This event is open for press coverage.

Pre-set time for cameras: 8:30 a.m.
Final access time for all press: 9:30 a.m.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of either:

  • A US Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center,);
  • A photo ID issued by the employing media organization; or
  • A letter on official original letterhead from their organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (driver’s license or passport)
