Death of Austrian President Thomas Klestil

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and all our colleagues at the Department of State wish to express our condolences to the people of Austria, and to the Klestil family, on the death of Austrian President Thomas Klestil. President Klestil gave exemplary service to the Austrian nation. He had a deep and lasting friendship with the United States, having represented Austria in Washington twice, including as Ambassador; in New York as Permanent Representative to the United Nations; and in Los Angeles as Consul General. He will be greatly missed.
