U.S. Pledges $230 Million For Haiti's Reconstruction

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell announced today at the International Haiti Donors Conference that the United States would give Haiti $230 million during fiscal years 2004 and 2005, to help the island nation rebuild its infrastructure and prepare for national elections in 2005.

U.S. assistance will focus on helping Haiti in four key areas: preparing for free and fair elections; meeting the health and humanitarian needs of its citizens; reviving the country’s economy by promoting jobs and growth; and strengthening the rule of law. The United States will also provide funding and technical assistance to Haiti’s government ministries, judiciary and health infrastructure, as well as to the Haitian National Police.

The United States looks forward to working with other donors and with the Haitian Interim Government for a more prosperous future for the Haitian people.
