Question Taken at the July 28, 2004 Press Briefing

Iraq: Consulate in Mosul?

Question: Have we opened a consulate in Mosul? Do we have an office there?

Answer: We have four regional offices in Iraq – in Mosul, Kirkuk, Hillah, and Basrah. The four regional offices (not consulates) are staffed by State Department personnel. USAID, the Department of Justice and the Project and Contracting Office also use the regional offices to provide reconstruction, training and technical assistance to the Iraqis.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad can provide only limited emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iraq.
