Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to Travel to Greenland

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will travel on Friday August 6, 2004 to Greenland.

While in Greenland, Secretary Powell will sign, together with Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller and Greenland Deputy Premier Josef Motzfeldt, an accord that modernizes the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement. They will also sign declarations that establish a new framework for fostering broader economic and technical and environmental cooperation between the United States and Greenland.

These agreements pave the way for an upgrade of radar facilities at Thule Air Base, which will support the U.S. missile defense program.
