Question Taken at the July 29, 2004 Press Briefing

Public Announcement for Mexico

Question:   Did the Mexican government request a change to the language in the Public Announcement issued for Mexico on July 23, 2004, regarding travel to Cancun?

Answer:   We refer you to the Mexican government regarding any actions they may have taken.

Question:   Was there a change in the Public Announcement language after it was issued on July 23?

Answer:   The information contained in the Public Announcement for Mexico issued on July 23, 2004, remains current. There was no existing Public Announcement for Mexico prior to July 23.

Public Announcements are a means to disseminate information about short-term and/or trans-national conditions posing risks to the security of American citizen travelers and residents abroad.

One of the Department of State’s primary responsibilities is the protection of American citizen interests in other countries. We seek to provide current information about situations or conditions worldwide affecting U.S. citizen safety so that they can make informed decisions regarding their personal security.

The Department of State constantly reviews available information pertaining to the safety and security of American citizens around the world and makes decisions, as warranted, to issue or update Travel Warnings, Public Announcements and Consular Information Sheets. When there is a change in these documents, the document is reissued with the new issuance date. This information is available on the Department of State’s Consular Affairs website at http://travel.state.gov/travel/index.html.
