Taken Questions
Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
August 6, 2004
Question Taken at August 5, 2004 Daily Press Briefing

Sergeant Jenkins

Question:   Have there been any discussions with the Japanese Government regarding the case of Sergeant Charles Robert Jenkins? What is the U.S. involvement, if any, in the case?

Answer:   Yes, as we indicated earlier, we have informed the Japanese Government that we will seek custody of Sergeant Jenkins at an appropriate time. He faces serious charges, including desertion.

U.S. military doctors have been in contact with the Japanese doctors treating Sergeant Jenkins. We are not prepared to comment further on any legal issues.

The State Department cannot negotiate the outcome of a legal process and is not involved in any such discussions with Japan.

I would refer questions regarding military legal procedures to the Department of Defense.
