Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage to Travel to Russia and Kazakhstan

Deputy Secretary Richard Armitage will travel to Russia and Kazakhstan this week. He will depart Washington October 26 and return October 30.

The Deputy Secretary will travel first to Moscow, Russia, where he will co-chair with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak a meeting of the U.S.-Russia Counterterrorism Working Group. The Working Group will exchange information on a broad range of terrorism issues and explore specific areas of counterterrorism cooperation. While in Russia, the Deputy Secretary will also have bilateral meetings with senior host government officials.

From Moscow, the Deputy Secretary will travel to Astana, Kazakhstan, for meetings with senior government officials as well as non-governmental leaders. The Deputy Secretary will thank Kazakhstan for its support in the Global War on Terror, especially its participation in coalition operations in Iraq, and discuss political and economic reform, energy and investment issues.
