Question Taken at Daily Briefing of Oct. 28, 2004

Burma: Than Shwe Visit to India

Question:   Do you have any comment on Than Shwe's visit to India?

Answer:   Than Shwe is currently on an October 24-29 state visit to India.

The Government of India is aware of our concerns about the situation in Burma.

We hope that the Government of India will convey to Than Shwe during his visit concerns shared by the international community. Those concerns include the failure of Burma's leaders to free political prisoners, including Aung San Suu Kyi, engage in a meaningful dialogue with other political and ethnic leaders to achieve national reconciliation and establish democracy, and ensure that the fundamental human rights of the people of Burma are respected.
