Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage to Address Area Middle School Students Participating in International Education Program

Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage will address Washington, D.C.-area middle school students at the closing ceremony of a State Department-sponsored international education program called "Two Bays, One World" on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at noon in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the U.S. Department of State.

Approximately 200 students from Washington, D.C.’s Bertie Backus Middle School and Anne Arundel County’s Central Middle School have participated in the "Two Bays, One World" program, which began in September. Tuesday’s event will also feature presentations by the local students and by students at Bangladesh’s William Carey Academy via a live audio hookup. Assistant Secretary of State John F. Turner, Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs, will make remarks about the Bureau’s leadership of the program.

Over the course of the two-month program, students compared and contrasted the Chesapeake Bay and the Bay of Bengal from environmental, social, and economic perspectives and participated in activities including field trips to the Embassy of Bangladesh and the Chesapeake Bay. Partners in the program include: the Government of Bangladesh; the Chesapeake Bay Foundation; the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center; the Conservation Fund; Maryland and Washington, D.C. public schools; and the William Carey Academy of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

This event is open for press coverage.

Pre-set time for cameras is 11:00 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance.
Final access time for all press is 11:30 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance.

Media representatives who plan to attend must present one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
