| Taken Questions Richard Boucher Washington, DC December 7, 2004 Question Taken at the December 7, 2004 Daily Press Briefing Mexico: Foreign Secretary Derbez Announces Candidacy to be the Secretary General of the Organization of American StatesQuestion:Any reaction to the announcement that Mexico will support Foreign Secretary Derbez’ candidacy for Secretary General of the Organization of American States?
Answer: Foreign Secretary Derbez has contributed to the excellent state of relations between the United States and Mexico. Regarding the campaign for the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), we are consulting with our regional partners to identify the person who would be best suited to hold this very important position.
Question: Has the United States publicly supported former Salvadoran President Francisco „Paco" Flores’ candidacy for the post of OAS Secretary General?
Answer: The United States’ position has been for some time, and continues to be, support for a consensus candidate from Central America, preferably a former President, to become the Secretary General of the Organization of American States. Of course, we will evaluate all the candidates on their merits and seek consensus with the other 33 member states of the Organization of American States.
Question: Did the Mexican government ever propose a Derbez candidacy either publicly or privately to the United States, and if so, what was the U.S. response?
Answer: As we said before, our position has been to await a Central American consensus candidate, and we have conveyed that position to the member state governments.
