Burma -- Restrictions on Aung San Suu Kyi

The United States is deeply concerned for the welfare of 1991 Nobel Laureate and National League for Democracy General Secretary Aung San Suu Kyi,who remains under house arrest following the May 2003 attack on both her and her supporters. Over the past two days, the Burmese junta has further restricted Aung San Suu Kyi’s access to medical care and ordered most of her personal staff to leave the compound. We hold the Burmese junta solely responsible for her health, safety, security and well-being.

The Burmese junta continues to ignore the demands of its citizens and the international community for democracy and the free exercise and protection of human rights. We call on the junta to release Aung San Suu Kyi, U Tin Oo and all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally, to engage the democratic opposition and ethnic minority groups in a meaningful dialogue leading to genuine national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy, to allow the National League for Democracy to reopen its offices nationwide, and to respect and ensure the free exercise of the fundamental human rights of the people of Burma.
