U.S. Department of State Support for Organization of American States' Office of Promotion of Democracy

The U.S. Department of State recently contributed $389,746 to the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Special Program for the Promotion of Dialogue and Conflict Resolution. These funds will assist in advancing the work of the OAS in peaceful resolution of conflicts throughout the Hemisphere. This contribution brings the total amount of funds for this project to more than $800,000.

The United States supported the establishment of the Special Program for the Promotion of Dialogue and Conflict Resolution to enhance the Organization of American States’ ability to respond to requests from Member States for assistance in strengthening their capacity to resolve conflicts. The Special Program gives Member States the tools to achieve peaceful settlement of disputes, both within and beyond their borders.

The Special Program also assists the Organization of American States, governments and civil societies of its member states in the design and implementation of dialogue and consensus building processes, conflict prevention and resolution systems.

Additionally in 2004, the United States contributed a total of $2.9 million to the Organization of American States’ Democracy Fund to support programs that strengthen democracy and protect human rights in the Hemisphere.
