Question Taken at the January 28, 2005 Daily Press Briefing

Mexican Border Kidnappings

Question:   Have we provided information to the Mexican Government about the 27 kidnapping cases noted in our Public Announcement for the Mexican border region?

Answer:   Promoting the welfare and protecting American citizens abroad is the State Department’s most important duty. We are in continuous contact with Mexican authorities, who have told us they are committed to addressing the problem of violence along the border, as well as the murders and disappearances of American citizens throughout Mexico. The United States and Mexico are cooperating to resolve cases involving harm to American citizens, consistent with U.S. and Mexican law.
