Question Taken at the January 31, 2005 Daily Press Briefing

Israeli/Palestinian Violence

Question:   Do you have any comment on today’s violence in which Israel and the Palestinians are blaming each other for the death of a ten-year-old girl in Gaza?

Answer:   The death of any innocent individual, especially children, is a tragedy. We urge all parties, especially at this most promising moment for progress between Palestinians and Israelis that we have seen in recent years, to remain focused on measures to bring an end to violence and terror, and to avoid actions that escalate tension and create obstacles to implementing the roadmap and realizing the President’s two-state vision.

We are in regular contact with senior Israeli and Palestinian officials.
