Selection of Stephen Krasner as New Director of Policy Planning

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today announced the selection of Stephen Krasner as the new Director of Policy Planning. Dr. Krasner comes to the Department from Stanford University, where he was Director of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, Deputy Director of the Stanford Institute for International Studies, a senior fellow by courtesy at the Hoover Institution, and the Graham H. Stuart Professor of International Relations.

As Policy Planning Director, Dr. Krasner will focus on a wide range of strategic issues, including the development of American capacity to address problems posed by weak and failing states and to support institutions that support freedom, democracy and good governance.

Dr. Krasner has served previously in government, as a member of the Policy Planning Staff in 2001 and as Director for Governance and Development at the National Security Council in 2002, where he worked primarily on the Millennium Challenge Account.

Dr. Krasner received his BA in history from Cornell University, his MA in international affairs from Columbia University, and his PhD in political science from Harvard University.
