Question Taken at Daily Briefing of Feb. 18, 2005

Unrest in Nepal (Taken Question)

Question:   What is your reaction to news reports today of arrests of demonstrators and cuts in phone service in Kathmandu?

Answer:   We remain concerned about reports of ongoing arrests and detentions and government interference with communications. Our embassy confirms that telephone and internet service was cut for part of the day today but has been restored, and that there were some crowds and small parades in parts of Kathmandu.

We have stated repeatedly that the King should promptly release detainees, end house arrests and restore civil liberties and freedom of the media all in the context of a rapid return to multiparty democracy.
