Election Results in Guinea-Bissau

The United States congratulates President-elect Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira on his victory in the Presidential runoff election of July 24, 2005. The runoff election results were confirmed on August 19 by the Supreme Court of Justice of Guinea-Bissau.

We, along with the United Nations, Economic Community of West African States, and others in the international community, call on all parties to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court so that Guinea-Bissau can move forward to a more peaceful and prosperous future.

We look forward to working with President-elect Vieira and his administration to pursue the common interests of our two countries.
