U.S. and India Virtual Coordination and Information Center Announced

Noting the important link between democracy and development, both the United States and India committed their governments to a Global Democracy Initiative during the summit of President Bush and Indian Prime Minister Singh on July 18, 2005. As a part of the initiative, both the U.S. and India committed to establishing a virtual Coordination and Information Center to share best practices on democracy, identify opportunities for joint support, and highlight capacity-building training programs. The Virtual Democracy Center website can be found at http://democracy.state.gov.

As part of this initiative the U.S. and India are working to strengthen democratic capacity in societies who wish to become more open and pluralistic. The United States and India are also cooperating closely under the auspices of the Community of Democracies, supporting UN electoral assistance programs, and have each provided $10 million to the UN Democracy Fund.
