Death of Johannes Rau, Former President, Federal Republic of Germany

The U.S. is saddened by the death of Johannes Rau, the Former President of the Federal Republic of Germany. President Rau will be remembered for his long and distinguished record of public service to Germany as a Mayor, Minister-President, and Federal President. President Rau gave voice to Germany’s moral conscience, championed human rights, and advocated national unity and reconciliation between east and west. The government of the United States extends its condolences to President Rau’s widow, Christina and their daughters.
