Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC March 21, 2006
Cuba: Three-Year Anniversary of the Crackdown on ActivistsThree years ago, the Castro regime unleashed a sweeping crackdown on independent civil society activists, condemning 75 people to sentences of up to 28 years in prison for nothing more than promoting a free exchange of ideas.
Sixty of these activists are still in prison. Fifteen were provisionally released due to medical concerns, but could be re-imprisoned at any time.
Three years after this terrible act, the United States again calls upon the Castro regime to free all political prisoners. The Cuban people deserve a government committed to democracy and freedom and the full observance of human rights.
