Solomon Islands - Civil Disturbances

The United States is concerned by civil disturbances in the Solomon Islands last week, sparked by controversy over the composition of its elected government. We condemn the violence and destruction, which will only bring about economic hardship for Solomon Islands citizens.

Recent political changes in the Solomon Islands have taken place according to the country’s constitution and laws. We urge continued adherence to legal and constitutional processes.

The United States also reaffirms its support for the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI), which was dispatched at the Solomon Islands Government’s request to help maintain civil order. We strongly encourage the Government of the Solomon Islands to continue to work with RAMSI to foster economic growth and good governance in the country.
