East Timor - Upholding Democracy

The United States and the international community have supported the development of East Timor as a democratic country governed under its Constitution and by rule of law. We encourage continuing efforts by senior officials of the Government of East Timor and other parties to restore calm in the wake of disturbing violence in East Timor in late April.

We urge all parties to continue these efforts as the Fretilin Party Congress scheduled for May 17-20 meets and in future. We hope that the Timorese people and Government will use all opportunities to work to resolve their differences in a peaceful and democratic manner. The United States supports a continued UN presence in East Timor to assist in further developing East Timor's governing institutions.
