Death of WHO Director General Lee Jong-wook

Secretary Rice was saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Lee Jong-wook, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Lee dedicated 23 years of service to the WHO, helping the international community improve the health and wellbeing of people around the world. The United States worked closely with him over many years, including on efforts addressing avian and pandemic influenza and furthering the fight against HIV/AID. We extend our condolences to his family and friends and we mourn the loss of this international public servant.
