| Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC May 31, 2006 Burma: Call for a UN Security Council Resolution
By extending Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention, the Burmese regime has demonstrated its continued unwillingness to engage in a credible and inclusive political process. The economic, political and public health situation in Burma has deteriorated to the point where the regime’s activities and repression of political rights now poses a threat to the stability, peace and security of the region. The international community must continue pressing the Burmese regime to change its policies. To this end, the United States intends to pursue a UN Security Council resolution that will underscore the international community’s concerns about the situation in Burma, including the unjustifiable detention of a great champion of democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, and our common position that the regime must ensure an inclusive and democratic political process. 2006/562 |
