Barry L. Wells Named Chief Diversity Officer

In order to advance the Department of State's commitment to individual and organizational success, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced the appointment of Barry L. Wells as Chief Diversity Officer this week. The Department of State is the first Cabinet agency to establish the position of Chief Diversity Officer with oversight authority to fully integrate and transform diversity principles into practices in the Department's operations.

Mr. Wells will add this title and responsibility to his current role as Director of the Office of Civil Rights. He brings over 30 years of professional experience to his expanded role. As Chief Diversity Officer, Mr. Wells is charged with looking at Department programs and practices to identify possible impediments to diversity in its broadest sense at every level of the organization.

Mr. Wells has served at the Department of State for over 18 years. Before assuming his present position, Mr. Wells served as the Deputy Director of the Foreign Service Institute.

For further information, please contact Public Affairs Officer Brenda Greenberg, 202-647-4282.
