Mrs. Bush Announces the Partnership For Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas

Mrs. Laura Bush today announced the launch of the Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas - an initiative to unite experts from the United States of America, Brazil, Costa Rica, and Mexico in the fight against breast cancer - during the White House Conference on the Americas in Arlington, VA.

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death for women worldwide. Recognizing that the global challenge of breast cancer is beyond the capacity of any one partner or sector to address, this unique partnership joins the medical expertise of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, with the global grassroots network and educational resources of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the regional management experience of the Institute of International Education's West Coast Center (IIE), and the strong commitment of the U.S government represented by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Office of Public Diplomacy and our Embassies in the three countries.

Together, these partners will work to build capacity in the region by increasing research, training and community-outreach efforts; and to help women in these countries gain the knowledge and confidence they need to take charge of their own health.

This partnership represents an expansion of the U.S. - Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research, launched by Mrs. Bush at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Mission Conference in June 2006. Building upon workplace awareness programs, community needs assessments and bilateral medical exchanges, Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research of the Americas activities will adapt and apply proven awareness and medical models to develop long-term programs that can be used throughout the region.

The White House Conference on the Americas convened representatives from non-governmental organizations, private sector, faith-based and community groups, and volunteer associations for the one day conference to discuss improving education, meeting health care needs, expanding economic opportunity, and building public-private partnerships in the region.
