Answer: North Korea agreed to the IAEA's request for access to five facilities related to the production and separation of plutonium. Four of those are at Yongbyon: the 5 MWe reactor; the Spent Fuel Reprocessing Facility; 50 MWe reactor under construction; and the fuel fabrication plant. The fifth, the 200 MWe under construction, is at Taechon. The International Atomic Energy Agency has verified that North Korea has shut down the 5 MWe reactor at the Yongbyon complex, and intends to verify the status of the remaining four facilities by Wednesday, July 18. We welcome North Korea's shutdown of the Yongbyon nuclear reactor and the return of IAEA personnel to conduct all necessary monitoring and verification as a first step to complete fulfillment of the September 2005 Joint Statement. 2007/596 |
