Sierra Leone: Peaceful Conduct of the August 11th General Elections

We congratulate Sierra Leone on the peaceful conduct of presidential and parliamentary elections on August 11^th. The independent National Electoral Commission and the Sierra Leone Police in particular are to be commended, as well as the general electorate, who voted in record numbers.

Ballots are still being counted and certified to determine if one of the candidates received the requisite 55% majority, to forego a runoff election. We urge the Government of Sierra Leone and all political parties to continue respecting the constitutionally mandated electoral process.
