Under Secretary of State Karen P. Hughes to Visit Youth Programs in Morocco

Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen P. Hughes is traveling to Morocco August 14-17, 2007. This visit underscores the importance of the Youth Enrichment Programs (YEP) launched this summer in 13 countries and in the West Bank and Gaza. The YEP are breaking new ground, reaching out to a new audience at an even younger age --8-to-14-years old -- than those participating in traditional exchange programs.

YEP are carried out in close cooperation with host country partner organizations. Programs vary from country to country, but generally include English language instruction, sports, civics classes, leadership training, science and art activities in summer camp-like settings. The programming is structured to foster tolerance, develop leadership skills and counter ideological support for violent extremism.

During her visit, Under Secretary Hughes will travel to Rabat to tour a pod-casting program targeting marginalized youth, meet with the Minister of Youth Mohammed El-Gahs, meet with youth NGO leaders and young participants, and visit the Al-Jadida YEP program. She will be accompanied during her visit by Ambassador Thomas T. Riley.
