Under Secretary Burns to Travel to Middle East

At the request of the President and Secretary Rice, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicholas Burns will travel to Israel August 15-17, 2007. He will meet with Prime Minister Olmert, Foreign Minister Livni, Defense Minister Barak, and other Israeli officials. He will sign the Memorandum of Understanding on the new U.S. $30 billion, ten-year military assistance package. He will also continue discussions on regional security, including the challenge posed by Iran. Under Secretary Burns will then meet with Palestinian Authority leaders regarding the development of a political horizon and American humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
