| Press Statement Gonzalo Gallegos, Acting Spokesperson Washington, DC December 7, 2007 Election of a New Lebanese President is Further DelayedToday Lebanon's parliament once again failed to elect a president. While a majority of members are ready to vote for a proposed constitutional amendment, a minority in the opposition did not agree to permit the proposed amendment to pass through the cabinet, as the Lebanese constitution requires. The United States regrets the attempts by some MPs to link non-constitutional measures to presidential elections. It is bad for all of Lebanon’s people, and for the sovereignty and freedom of the nation, to be deprived of a president.
We urge the Lebanese MPs and ministers to move quickly to pave the way for the president to be elected. Until such time as a new president takes office, the United States has full confidence in, and fully supports, the legitimate Lebanese Government in managing the affairs of the state and in the Lebanese Armed Forces in continuing to provide security.
