Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC March 14, 2007
Anniversary of Lebanon's Cedar RevolutionToday marks the second anniversary of Lebanon's Cedar Revolution, when the Lebanese people historically took to the streets in a peaceful demonstration to demand a sovereign and democratic country, free from foreign interference, and to call for the truth behind the murder of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Through the power of their unified voices, the Lebanese people set into motion significant change. They have witnessed the complete withdrawal of Syrian troops from their country, and Lebanon is now governed by a legitimate and democratically elected government with the Lebanese Army deployed throughout the country for the first time in almost 40 years.
However, the road to freedom and democracy in Lebanon has not been without sacrifice. The United States stands with the Lebanese people in seeking the truth behind the violent acts that have taken innocent lives. And, we remain firm in our commitment to the Lebanese people that an International Tribunal with judicial authority be promptly established.
The United States believes the Lebanese people's aspiration for a brighter, more secure future must be achieved. Renewed dialogue between Lebanon's political leaders is a positive step towards that end, as is the Lebanese Security Forces' quick apprehension of the perpetrators of the recent bus bombings in Ain Alaq. We remain committed to assisting the Lebanese people to achieve their vision of a sovereign, democratic, and prosperous Lebanon.
