Charles E. Williams, Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Overseas Buildings Operations Announces LEED Certification for the U.S. Embassy Compound in Sofia, Bulgaria

The U.S. Department of State has a long-standing commitment to the sustainability of the future environment through its design and construction of green embassies around the world.

The Office of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) has taken a holistic and integrated approach to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification. The New Embassy Compound project in Sofia, Bulgaria incorporated a wide range of technologies and strategies from OBO's Energy and Sustainable Design Program. OBO prepared an extensive report for rigorous review by the USGBC to earn LEED Certification. 26 points and 7 prerequisites were awarded according to compliance with measures of performance and standards set by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The Sofia New Embassy Compound is the first US Embassy to be measured under this internationally recognized green building rating system.

USGBC's standards in the following categories five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environment.
