State Department Marks 50th Anniversary of Treaties of Rome Signing

Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte will host a March 26 reception in the State Department's Benjamin Franklin Room to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, which helped create a half century of peace and prosperity and led to the establishment of the European Union as a major actor on the world stage.

Sharing common values and common responsibilities, the United States applauds the achievements of integrated Europe and views the EU as an essential partner in facing global challenges.

The Deputy Secretary will be joined by European Commission officials as the State Department marks the anniversary. Andris Piebalgs, member of the European Commission; Ambassador Klaus Scharioth of the German Embassy; and Ambassador John Bruton of the Delegation of the European Commission will speak alongside Deputy Secretary Negroponte. Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried will make remarks, as well. Guests will include diplomats, business people, political figures, academics, journalists, and NGO representatives.
