Syria: Political Prisoners

Question: Has the United States raised the arrest and detention of political prisoners, especially the cases of Anwar al-Bunni and Kamal Labwani, with the Syrian Government either here in Washington or in Damascus?

Answer: We have raised this issue with Syrian officials in Damascus, and have regularly called upon the Syrian government to attend to its human rights issues. We will continue to work with our allies to address the regime's problematic policies and behavior. We reiterate our call for the Syrian government to end its oppression of civil society and release all political prisoners. The Syrian Government must improve its human rights record and allow for basic freedoms of its citizens.
