| Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC May 4, 2007 U.S. Releases Fourth Climate Action Report for Public CommentToday the U.S. Department of State released for public comment a draft of the Fourth Climate Action Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The report was developed through an interagency process led by the State Department and, once finalized, will be submitted to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The report focuses on actions that the United States is taking to address climate change. As required by Framework Convention guidelines, it provides information about the impacts of our programs on overall U.S. greenhouse gas emission trends. It also identifies actions that the U.S. is taking to characterize better and respond to these trends. The Climate Action Report will show that the President's broad portfolio of actions and unparalleled financial commitment to climate change are working. In 2002, the President set an ambitious goal to reduce the greenhouse gas intensity of the U.S. economy by 18 percent by 2012. The report shows we are on track to meet and possibly exceed the goal; U.S. emissions in 2012 will be more than 4 percent below levels that would have occurred had we not adopted our robust climate policies and measures. Between 2002 and 2012, this policy is expected to avoid more than 2,225 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. |
