| Taken Question Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC October 4, 2007 Question Taken at the October 4, 2007 Press Briefing Burma - Policy Regarding Meetings with Burmese Officials
Question: Does the Charge d'Affaires' upcoming meeting with leaders of the military junta constitute a change in policy regarding senior officials meeting without first being granted access to Aung San Suu Kyi? Answer: No. Our policy is not to send senior U.S. representatives to Burma for meetings with regime officials if those representatives could not also meet with Aung San Suu Kyi. However, it is part of the responsibilities of our Charge d'Affaires Shari Villarosa, as the senior U.S. official at Embassy Rangoon, to meet with representatives of the Burmese regime. Ms. Villarosa's meeting tomorrow with senior Burmese Foreign Ministry officials in Nay Pyi Taw is consistent with our long-standing policy. 2007/849 |
