| Press Statement Tom Casey, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC October 12, 2007 Recent Events Threaten to Setback Efforts at Peace in SudanWe are concerned that recent events in Sudan threaten to setback efforts to achieve peace in Darfur and throughout Sudan. We condemn the recent cycle of violence in Darfur and the ongoing harassment of humanitarian workers by hostile groups. We are concerned that the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has decided to suspend its participation in the Government of National Unity because of a deadlock with the National Congress Party over implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).
We call on the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) to refrain from violence, immediately withdraw their armed forces along the North-South border in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), redouble their efforts to fully implement the agreement in good faith and adhere to ceasefires. We also call on the Government of Sudan and rebel factions to focus their energies on readying themselves for peace negotiations, beginning in Libya on October 27. We continue our efforts to support humanitarian assistance, the full and rapid deployment of the UNAMID peacekeeping force and the UN-led political process. The crisis in Darfur will only be solved through the implementation of the CPA, and through peaceful political negotiations. 2007/881 |
