Secretary Rice’s Meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Komura (Taken Question)

Question: Provide a read-out of Secretary Rice's bilateral meeting with His Excellency Masahiko Komura, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Were there any discussions on Burma? If so, what were the nature of those discussions?

Answer: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Japanese Foreign Minister Komura held good discussions on issues of mutual interest. Demonstrating the close and productive bilateral relationship, Foreign Minister Komura met with Secretary Rice the day after he was appointed Foreign Minister. The Secretary and Foreign Minister Komura discussed the Six-Party Talks, Iran, and Japan's very important refueling operation for coalition forces in the Indian Ocean under Operation Enduring Freedom. They noted that the United States and Japan share similar positions on matters such as climate change and the importance of cooperation on this issue.

Secretary Rice and Foreign Minister Komura shared deep concern regarding the violence against peaceful civilians in Burma. The Secretary offered her condolences on the death of a Japanese cameraman during a demonstration there.
