Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the Bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will deliver remarks at the Commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon on Friday, April 18, at 10:00 a.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room of the U.S. Department of State.

On April 18, 1983, 41 U.S. government employees, ten contractors, one journalist, and others lost their lives in what was, at that time, the deadliest attack ever on a U.S. diplomatic mission. Approximately 120 others were also injured in the attack.

On this day, we will gather to remember those who perished and those who survived. We will honor their commitment to service and the attainment of peace through diplomatic means.

Under Secretary for Management Patrick Kennedy will provide opening remarks, followed by Secretary of State Rice, and former Ambassador to Lebanon, Robert Dillon. The remarks are open to press coverage for writers and stills and pool press coverage for cameras.

Pre-set time for cameras: 9:00 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance

Final access time for all press: 9:30 a.m. from the 23rd Street entrance

Media representatives may attend this briefing upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
